Lib Dems Increase Vote in Swindon and Nationally9.59.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 2nd May 2008
The Liberal Democrats in Swindon increased their number of votes on May 1st 2008, compared to last year. The Swindon Liberal Democrats improved on the actual number of votes cast compared with 2007, despite the reduction in turnout in many areas of the town this year. Cllr Stan Pajak was re-elected in Eastcott ward with a hugely increased majority gaining 1237 votes - some 350 more than last year - increasing the Lib Dem share of the vote from 39.5% to 58.5%. Nationally it was a great night for the Liberal Democrats, beating Labour into third place in the overall number of votes cast (based on BBC projections), whilst increasing both numbers of Councillors and the number of Councils controlled by the Liberal Democrats. The Liberal Democrats gained control of the Councils in Sheffield, Hull, St Albans and Burnley. Related Link:View Local Election Results 2008 (PDF file).
